Millions of Android Devices Vulnerable to Heartbleed Bug

Millions of smartphones and tablets runningGoogle Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system have the Heartbleed software bug, in a sign of how broadly the flaw extends beyond the Internet and into consumer devices.
While Google said in a blog post on April 9 that all versions of Android are immune to the flaw, it added that the “limited exception” was one version dubbed 4.1.1, which was released in 2012.
Security researchers said that version of Android is still used in millions of smartphones and tablets, including popular models made by Samsung Electronics Co., HTC Corp. and other manufacturers. Google statistics show that 34 percent of Android devices use variations of the 4.1 software. The company said less than 10 percent of active devices are vulnerable. More than 900 million Android devices have been activated worldwide.
The Heartbleed vulnerability was made public earlier this week and can expose people to hacking of their passwords and other sensitive information. While a fix was simultaneously made available and quickly implemented by the majority of Internet properties that were vulnerable to the bug, there is no easy solution for Android gadgets that carry the flaw, security experts said. Even though Google has provided a patch, the company said it is up to handset makers and wireless carriers to update the devices.

Long Cycle

“One of the major issues with Android is the update cycle is really long,” said Michael Shaulov, chief executive officer and co-founder of Lacoon Security Ltd., a cyber-security company focused on advanced mobile threats. “The device manufacturers and the carriers need to do something with the patch, and that’s usually a really long process.”
Christopher Katsaros, a spokesman for Mountain View, California-based Google, confirmed there are millions of Android 4.1.1 devices. He pointed to an earlier statement by the company, in which it said it has “assessed the SSL vulnerability and applied patches to key Google services.”
Microsoft Corp. said yesterday that the Windows and Windows Phone operating systems and most services aren’t impacted.
“A few services continue to be reviewed and updated with further protections,” Tracey Pretorius, director of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing, wrote in an e-mailed statement.
Apple Inc. didn’t respond to messages for comment.

Mobile Risk

Verizon Wireless, the biggest U.S. mobile-phone company, said yesterday no other devices are impacted.
“Verizon is aware of the OpenSSL security vulnerability referred to as ‘Heartbleed,’ and we are working with our device manufacturers to test and deploy patches to any affected device on our network running Android 4.1.1,” spokesman Albert Aydin wrote in an e-mail. “Other mobile operating systems we offer are not affected by this vulnerability and we have no reason to believe that the issue has resulted in any compromise of Verizon customer accounts, websites, or data.”
The Heartbleed bug, which was discovered by researchers from Google and a Finnish company called Codenomicon, affects OpenSSL, a type of open-source encryption used by as many as 66 percent of all active Internet sites. The bug, which lets hackers silently extract data from computers’ memory, and a fix for it were announced simultaneously on April 7.

Broad Fallout

The reach of the vulnerability continues to widen as Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) and Juniper Networks Inc. (JNPR) said earlier this week that some of their networking-gear products are affected and will be patched. The Canadian government has ordered websites operated by the federal government that use the vulnerable version of OpenSSL to be taken offline until they can be fixed.
The vast majority of large companies protected their systems immediately and the push is now on to make smaller companies do the same, said Robert Hansen, a specialist in Web application security and vice president of the advanced technologies group of WhiteHat Security Inc.
Hackers have been detected scanning the Internet looking for vulnerable servers, especially in traffic coming from China, though it’s difficult to know how many have been successful, said Jaime Blasco, director of AlienVault Labs, part of AlienVault LLC. Many attempts have hit dead ends, Blasco said.

German Users

More than 80 percent of people running Android 4.1.1 who have shared data with mobile security firm Lookout Inc. are affected, said Marc Rogers, principal security researcher at the San Francisco-based company. Users in Germany are nearly five times as likely as those in the U.S. to be affected, probably because there is a device that uses that version of Android that is popular there, Rogers wrote in an e-mail.
Still, there are no signs that hackers are trying to attack Android devices through the vulnerability as it would be complicated to set up and the success rate would be low, Rogers said. Individual devices are less attractive to go after because they need to be targeted one by one, he said.
“Given that the server attack affects such a larger number of devices and is so much easier to carry out, we don’t expect to see any attacks against devices until after the server attacks have been completely exhausted,” Rogers wrote in an e-mail.

Google could be about to make a radical change to the way it mobile operating system Android looks and works with Android 4.5 (codenamed Lollipop) set to unify Chrome, Android and search.
Google is expected to launch the next version of its Android software at the company's developer conference- Google I/O - in June and according to leaked details, Google is planning a significant overhaul to the interface.
The details relate to an internal Google experiment called Project Hera. Liam Spradlin on Android Police says that from what he understands, Project Hera "essentially represents Google's effort to unify the experience users have in Android, Chrome, and Search all on your Android-powered device."
Multitasking
The main visual improvement Hera will bring is to the multitasking experience on Android. Currency Android offers up a stative view of recently used apps, but Hera will introduce a new HTML5-style interface where users will quickly be able to carry out certain actions without fully opening the app.
"This would mean that apps with functionality carried out over the web could plug into Hera for easier, more ephemeral experiences on Android," Spradlin says.

Hera would also allow for more integration between search, Chrome and your smartphone or tablet, allowing for actions carried out in your Chrome desktop browser to be carried over to your smartphone automatically. Again details of how this will work are unclear but it has been a goal of Google and in particular Sundar Pichai to make the move from desktop or laptop to smartphone much smoother.
One example given is when users sign up for a new website and need to confirm their email address. With Hera, users will be able to quickly switch to the multitasking view where a pop-up button will allow them to quickly confirm their email address without opening the app fully.
HTML 5
Full details of how Hera will work are not yet known, but Android Police believes its will be built on Google's Chromium platform, and will match the design of a system-wide Android overhaul which the company is planning for Android 4.5.
However what could be the biggest improvement with Hera is the ability to easily plug HTML5 functionality into Android apps, bringing a much more immersive experience on your smartphone. It would mean that HTML5 apps - as seen on smartphone platforms like Tizen or Firefox OS - could work natively on Android.
This could radically alter the Android app eco-system and give Google a significant advantage over Apple. 

Android on Laptops..??

With Windows 8, Microsoft wants one operating system that works well both on both desktop PCs and tablets. Google, meanwhile, has chosen Android as its tablet and smartphone interface while developing Chrome OS for laptops. So what happens when you put Android on a laptop with a touchscreen, like with the Lenovo Ideapad A10?
Not Quite Android
Many smartphone makers choose to put custom UI skins on Android. Usually, I’m not a fan of that. But on laptops, it’s a necessity. Android isn’t made for laptops, so to make it usable with this form factor, things need to change. Which is why Lenovo has introduced things like a custom dock which mimics the Windows Launch Superbar.
Android also needs a keyboard which steps away from the traditional Windows and Linux keyboards, with special buttons for common Android features like apps drawer, multi-tasking, etc.
But the downside of all this is that these are, in the end, cosmetic changes—the limit of what a company can do without moving beyond the core challenges Android faces as a laptop OS.
Apps, Apps, Apps
The big problem for Android is that its apps are not made for use in a laptop or desktop setting, they are made with the intent of being touched. While some of them translate decently to a keyboard+mouse interface, they still don’t match up to what you would get on Windows. And this is especially found wanting in the quality of the programs.
No office suite, for example, matches up to what you get in Microsoft Office on Windows or Mac. Kingsoft Office and others are decent, but the mobile versions are not as robust as desktop alternatives. Try working with tables in the word processor or try a spreadsheet file with macros and the limitations of mobile office suites come to the fore.Then there’s the complete lack of support for professional applications. Adobe Photoshop Touch or any other image-editing app on Android doesn’t hold a candle to their desktop counterparts.
But perhaps the most damaging thing for Android is that its mobile browsers aren’t as good as Chrome or Firefox on desktop. By default, these mobile browsers are set to load pages in mobile mode. With a few small hacks, you can set it so that the browser always fetches the desktop version of any website, but what makes Chrome and Firefox so great on desktop are the many extensions and plug-ins that make them a flawless interface to the internet. Without those, we might as well be using Internet Explorer, and that’s the same kind of limitation you feel when you use Chrome Mobile or Firefox Mobile on Android.
Bad Multi-tasking, Great Multimedia
The other thing that irks the Android laptop user is the lack of true multi-tasking. While floating windows have bridged the gap to an extent when compared to what you’d get on Windows or Linux, it’sstill not as good as the desktop operating systems.
Where Android does score is in its vast Play Store and all the goodies that brings. You have access to the full Google Play Music library of music, the Play Movies library of films and TV shows, and the Play Books library of novels and magazines. As a multimedia device, Android outshines Windows quite easily.
There’s also the added benefit of the Play Store and its collection of great casual games.
What Android Needs To Be A Laptop OS
So the question is, what would Android need to do to make it a great laptop operating system? The biggest thing missing, in my opinion, is bringing great desktop apps to this OS through the same Play Store. Just like you install Chrome for smartphones, there should be an option to install Chrome Desktop for the same touchscreen devices—this app, however, would need to be made for keyboard usage.
Apart from the apps front, a focus on true multi-tasking would be great, but that seems more unlikely. Instead, hardware manufacturers giving more RAM in Android laptops makes more sense, as features like floating windows take the brunt of turning Android into a desktop interface.Finally, much like there are homescreen replacements for smartphones, it would be great if there were third-party apps or downloadable elements that customised your Android to be used for laptops rather than tablets—i.e. turn the focus from touch-based input to keyboard+mouse input.
As things stand today, however, Android is a long way away from incorporating these features. As such, it’s not yet ready to be a laptop operating system, so your choices are still limited to Windows, Linux, Mac and Google’s other operating system, Chrome OS.

5 fantastic free Android apps that do amazing things the iPhone can’t

When it comes to smartphone platforms, there’s plenty to enjoy on iOS and Android alike. The “iPhone vs. Android” debate is obviously a heated one among enthusiasts, but most people will acknowledge that both platforms have advantages and disadvantages compared to the other. Many pros and cons leave room for debate, of course, but one thing is certain when it comes to third-party development: Google’s Android platform gives app makers far more freedom to explore new functionality than Apple’s iOS software.
We have written about great Android apps that do amazing things the iPhone cannot twice now in the past.
In the first edition of this series, we wrote about Cover, Swype, Profile Scheduler, Android Stocks Tape Widget and Smart Launcher. Then, in the second edition we covered five more outstanding apps: Event Flow Calendar Widget, DashClock Widget, Aviate, Tasker and AirDroid.

Dodol Launcher

The curiously named Dodol Launcher is described by its creator Camp Mobile as an app for customizing the decor of your Android interface.
In simple terms, Dodol lays the groundwork for users to apply any one of a huge number of custom themes to their Android phones. And we’re not just talking about simple wallpapers here, we’re talking about completely changing the look of your device with a new layout, new icon packs, new widgets and extended functionality.
The app’s description states that “thousands” of high-quality themes are available to Dodol users, and they all include custom icon packs and unique graphics. Also included are various skins for Dodol’s special widgets, which include a memory cleaner, quick settings, a battery widget and a customizable wide settings widget for adjusting things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ringer profile and more.
“Your phone will become a piece of artwork itself with the totally new wallpapers and icons,” Camp Mobile says on the app’s settings page.

It seems like there are a million mobile messaging services out there right now, and new ones pop up each day. There is one thing that most popular options do not do, however: Take standard SMS into account.
Hello SMS serves two main purposes. First, it completely replaces your Android phone’s messaging application, funneling all of your standard SMS, MMS and group messages into an app with a gorgeous tab-based UI that might just be one of the most enjoyable mobile messaging interfaces we have seen so far.

Indeed it does, but Weather Underground’s Android app is a perfect example of software that features terrific functionality on Android that its iOS counterpart simply cannot achieve.
Beyond providing users with exhaustive current weather and forecast information, the Weather Underground app for Android does two awesome things that no iOS weather app in the App Store can do.
First, it allows users to add one of several weather widgets to a home screen, providing detailed weather information that is updated on a configurable schedule.

Twitter buys Android lock-screen startup Cover

A young startup specializing in Android smartphone lock screens that anticipate what "app" a user might want at any give moment said Monday it has been bought by Twitter.

The acquisition comes about a year after the launch of Cover, which said its free application, which hit the virtual shelves of Google Play's online shop in October, has reached hundreds of thousands of users.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Cover team has joined San Francisco-based Twitter, according to the startup.
"We built a replacement for Android's default lock-screen that makes our phones easier to use by adapting to our context - providing fast access to the right apps at the right time," Cover said in a blog post.
"Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android."
The take-over indicates that Twitter is keen to make its popular one-to-many messaging service ever more enticing to people with smartphones powered by Google-backed Android software.
An IDC survey released in February found Android had a 78.1 % share of global smartphone shipments in the final three months of last year, bolstered by a 40 % jump in the number of handsets delivered.

For the full year, Android's market share was 78.6 % to 15.2 % for Apple's iOS, 3.3 % for Windows Phone and 1.9 % for BlackBerry, IDC said.

Samsung Galaxy Ace Style with Android 4.4 KitKat launched

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Style is now official and the company has announced that the smartphone will be available globally starting April. However, the company has not revealed the pricing details of the Galaxy Ace Style. Notably, the South Korean giant has also not announced the specific region availability of the Galaxy Ace Style.
The Samsung Galaxy Ace Style was recently reported to be showcased in Germany, where it is expected to be launched first. The Galaxy Ace Style is said to be priced between EUR 200 and EUR 300, which translates to roughly between Rs. 16,500 and Rs. 25,000.
The Galaxy Ace Style runs Android 4.4 KitKat with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface on top. The smartphone features a 4-inch TFT display with a WVGA (480x800 pixels) resolution. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor (unspecified chipset) with 512MB of RAM.

The smartphone sports a 5-megapixel rear camera and also houses a VGA front-facing camera. The Galaxy Ace Style comes with 4GB of inbuilt storage, which can be expanded up to 64GB via microSD card. Connectivity options on the device include Bluetooth, EDGE, GPRS and 3G.
The Galaxy Ace Style comes preloaded with ChatON, the instant messaging service from Samsung, which received an update recently.
The company has announced that the Galaxy Ace Style will be available in Cream White and Dark Gray colours.
On Monday, the Samsung Galaxy S5's official India price was confirmed as Rs. 51,500. The company confirmed to audiance that this is the "best buy" price.
Samsung also officially slashed the price of its Galaxy Note 3 Neo to Rs. 33,990, down from the previous price tag of Rs. 38,990.

Android has for long been restricted to smartphones and tablets, and is rightly considered as the mobile operating system. However, the advent of unofficial builds of Android designed exclusively for Intel's x86 hardware architecture with the likes of Dell XPS12 has changed the platform game.
Windows desktop or laptop or PC users are no longer restricted to using one-dimensional software and can indeed experiment with new open source software such as Android 4.4 KitKat, thanks to the release of fully-blown Android-x86 OS for PC.
Unlike the earlier builds, Android-x86 software extends support to numerous hardware manufacturers including Dell with an easy to setup installation procedure.
Prerequisites
  1. Download the Android-x86 ISO file which is more appropriate for your laptop, desktop or tablet model (check for model numbers with the download links).
  2. USB flash drive or a bootable CD/DVD drive
  3. Ensure there is sufficiently free hard disk space on the computer/laptop on which you want to install Android-x86 OS:
  • For Froyo – ICS, 2GB
  • For Jelly Bean 4.2 and 4.3, 8GB
  • For KitKat 4.4.2, 10GB
Steps to Install Android 4.4 KitKat on Your PC
  • Download the version of Android-x86 ISO that's suitable for your computer hardware, and UNetbootin tool for flashing.
  • Make a bootable USB drive with Unetbootin and the ISO image you downloaded earlier. Just click on the Diskimage button (see screenshot below) and select the ISO file you downloaded in step 1.
How to Install Android 4.4 KitKat on PC via Android x86 ISO
  • Reboot the computer with USB drive as source by tweaking a couple of settings in system BIOS. However, latest computers often default to USB drive at boot time, whenever it's available.
  • In the ensuing pop-up menu, select Install Android x86 to hard disk.
  • Choose the partition where you wish to install Android x86. If you chose to use a new partition, don't forget to format it right away.
  • Allow the install process to continue (Choose Yes or confirm to continue), as you are prompted to give permissions at various stages during GRUB Bootloader installation. Do not click cancel at any stage, else the system bootROM might get corrupted.
  • Now another prompt will ask your permission to perform system /r/w (read/write operations). Just click Yes to continue.
  • If you prefer to install ICS or earlier versions before KitKat, then you get another prompt to install virtual SD card. You may use 1800 MB of hard drive space as virtual SD card for flashing firmware. It is the maximum space supported.
  • Once the Android-x86 software is completely installed, reboot the computer.
As this installation supports multiboot setup, you can switch between Windows or Android at boot time, according to your taste.

And of course, you want to choose a carrier that offers fair prices, and provides the best coverage in your area. These are all good reasons to put the carrier decision first.
We have two major features to help you choose a carrier. On many sites I have read that which carrier people prefer are based on coverage, call quality, device selection, and other factors. And for our Fastest Mobile Networks feature, they sent drivers to 30 U.S. cities to scope out which smartphone carriers have the best data coverage. Because each of the national carriers sells a wide variety of phones, choosing your service provider should be your first move. Here's a quick rundown of what each one offers:
AT&T boasts nationwide coverage and a terrific selection of phones, particularly for texting. It has dramatically improved its service quality in the Northeast over the past two years, and is busy building out its newer 4G LTE network, which we just found to be the fastest in the nation. It's also the worst-rated carrier by our readers.
Sprint is relatively inexpensive, and offers some media services and a solid high-speed network. It also has the most open approach to third-party apps, letting its subscribers add a wide range of Java applications to its feature phones, although this is becoming less important as smartphones take over the majority of sales. Sprint has two prepaid brands, Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile, that sell phones without contracts.
T-Mobile offers mostly cutting-edge phones at relatively low monthly rates and enjoys a reputation for good customer service. It's the only carrier that offers a monthly discount in exchange for paying full price for your phone up front. But its network can be weaker than the other major carriers' in suburban and rural areas. T-Mobile is building out 4G LTE in earnest, having recently announced 116 U.S. cities with LTE coverage. T-Mobile also acquired MetroPCS back in May, and recently added LTE coverage to 15 MetroPCS cities as well.
Verizon Wireless is famed for its top-notch network quality and good customer service. Its prices can be higher than the competition, but when it comes to voice quality, Verizon phones often excel. That makes Verizon a perpetual leader in our Readers' Choice Awards. Verizon also currently has the largest 4G LTE network in the U.S.
There are also smaller, regional carriers. U.S. Cellular is only available in about half the country, yet it consistently gets great scores on our Readers' Choice Awards because of its strong commitment to customer service. Two years ago, the carrier launched the "Belief Project," a new customer-service plan offering perks like free battery swaps and replacements for damaged phones.

Finally, you may also see unlocked phones on the market that work with GSM networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile, but that carriers don't sell directly. These handsets are often imports. Because they're generally more expensive than carrier-approved-and-subsidized phones, few are sold in the U.S. But you can find a few bargains, such as the affordable Snapfon ez ONE-c, in case your AT&T or T-Mobile phone breaks and you need a replacement.

Do I Need a Smartphone?As more people become accustomed to instant email, Web, music, and messaging access at all times of the day, regardless of where they are, smartphones have become almost indispensable. That said, there's plenty of variety out there—not to mention devotees of specific OS platforms. That makes sense, though; sometimes, a platform's user interface or app selection just speaks to you, and that's all there is to it. With that in mind, and at the risk of attracting flames, let's break it down as well as we can for those who aren't so fully vested.
Right now, Google's Android and Apple's iOS are the two top smartphone platforms, both in U.S. sales and in availability of third-party apps. The iPhone has the best app store and the best media features. But Apple's tightly controlled ecosystem can feel stifling to some, the OS is beginning to show its age, and the iPhone 5 tops out at a 4-inch display. Android sales have now surpassed the iPhone by a significant margin, and there are plenty of Android handset choices. Many come with rich features like fast quad-core processors and 4.7-inch (or larger) hi-res screens. Also, Android's open-source nature makes it a tweaker's dream. But it also means fragmented third-party app compatibility, occasional bugs, carrier-installed bloatware you can't remove, and scattered, often sporadic OS updates.
If Android or iOS don't speak to you, there are two other good choices. BlackBerry's star is fading fast as attention shifts away from email and enterprise-managed devices. Even though the new BlackBerry 10 OS is a huge improvement, the two handsets running it haven't sold well to date. Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 has significantly better prospects, thanks to its solid design and Nokia's strong backing on the hardware side.
However, neither of these other platforms have the same level of third-party app support as iOS or Android. For many folks, apps are the primary reason to get a smartphone. Apple's App Store leads with more than 800,000 apps that are put through a rigorous quality check process. The iPhone also plays the best games and has the best music creation and drawing software. Google Play is catching up quickly, though. Many independent developers like the freedom Google Play offers, as Apple can put the kibosh on whatever app category it feels like (such as vintage game console emulators), but not all apps run on all Android phones; there are so many phone models that maintaining quality control is tough.
Regardless of your thoughts on platforms, form factor is also important. Touch screens allow for slimmer devices, smoother user interfaces, easy Web browsing, and a quality video-playback experience. And thanks to a lack of hardware buttons, third-party app developers can design their dream control schemes without worrying about differences in button layouts. But for some, typing on a touch screen can be a drag. Hardware QWERTY keyboards are easier to type quickly on, and are still ideal for many messaging fiends. But hardware keyboards either add bulk, in the case of horizontal and vertical sliders, or they reduce screen real estate, in the case of BlackBerry-like slabs.
Texting and Voice PhonesIn the age of mobile apps, smartphones get all the buzz these days, but plenty of the cell phones sold in the U.S. are lower-end feature phones, including waterproof phones, texting phones, and just plain voice phones. There are still reasons to get a simpler, less-expensive device. And it's not just about being a Luddite. Maybe you want to save on the device itself and reduce monthly fees by avoiding a smartphone's $20-$30 data package, or you just don't want to be tethered to the Internet all the time.
Unlike smartphones, feature phones are a matter of "what you see is what you get." They don't receive magical software upgrades or run thousands of additional apps. (Some feature phones come with "app stores," but don't be fooled: These exist primarily to sell you additional-cost services, as well as ringtones, wallpaper, and basic games.) If you're big on text messaging, you want a phone with a  hardware QWERTY keyboard, plus an unlimited texting plan. If you've got a small child, a camera is probably important. If you want to ditch your old iPod, keep an eye out for good media features.
For voice quality, read individual phone reviews. Wireless network coverage is always the biggest factor, but individual phones can vary in reception, earpiece quality, transmission quality through the microphone, and side-tone (the echo of your own voice that helps prevent you from yelling at the other person). A phone with middling to poor reception quality can be almost impossible to use in a marginal coverage area, while one with excellent reception can make the best of the little signal that's available. Another point to consider: Some phones have much louder speakerphones than others. A few have buggy Bluetooth stacks that make pairing with headsets and in-car hands-free stereos a pain.
The same advice I gave above about form factors also applies to feature phones. In this case, in addition to touch screens, sliders, and QWERTY slabs, you'll also have basic voice phones that are either candy-bar shaped with numeric keypads, or flip phones that open up to a larger, more comfortable numeric keypad. Flip phones have the added benefit of not needing a keyboard lock; close the phone, and you won't mistakenly dial someone while it's in your pocket. For the accident-prone, some phones, like the Boost Mobile Kyocera Hydro$31.99 at Amazon are even waterproof or ruggedized.
